A
brief review will be given on the discovery of the HBT (Hanbury-Brown
and Twiss) effect, where photons were exploited to
determine stellar dimensions, and its generalized application in high energy
physics, where hadrons are used to
determine spatio-temporal characteristics of hadronic sources. Interesting and inspiring new directions
will be highlighted, including source imaging methods at the femtometer scale.
