The phase diagram of hydrogen at high pressure: from condensed matter physics to plasma physics.

Paul Loubeyre, Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique, France

At low temperature, the study of the solid hydrogens has been a rich playground of condensed matter physics. Over the past two decades, turning on the pressure parameter has revealed also a rich class of phenomena. A strong inspiration of these high pressure studies is the search of the metallic phase of solid hydrogen. The pressure range to observe this new quantum state of matter has recently become accessible. Furthermore, a current effort is to extend these pressure studies at high temperature to explore the domain of dense plasma physics. In this talk, we will present an overview of the interesting issues, of the experimental approaches and of the most recent results associated to the phase diagram of hydrogen.
